The Army Air Assault Badge was established in 1974 and is awarded for completing the rigorous Air Assault School. The Rappel Master Tab is an additional, unofficial, and unapproved designation of proficiency for those who then complete an advanced Rappel Master course, requiring Air Assault School and Ranger/Special Forces qualifications. The Rappel Master designation is not an official U.S. Army award but is worn to signify extreme expertise in leading rappelling operations from both the ground and aircraft.
