The Army Air Assault Badge was officially adopted in 1978, but the design originated with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam in the early 1970s. The Rappel Master Tab is not a separate, official Army award but rather an insignia worn by graduates of the specialized Rappel Master Course, which is an advanced course for Air Assault School graduates. This course teaches soldiers to safely and effectively manage rappel operations, with graduates earning the Air Assault Badge and the 2B Additional Skill Identifier (ASI).
