The US Army rank Specialist 6 (SP6) was part of a system of specialist ranks that existed between 1955 and 1985. These ranks, from Specialist 1 (SP1) to Master Specialist (later Specialist 9), were designed to provide higher pay for soldiers with technical skills without requiring them to become non-commissioned officers (NCOs). The SP6 rank, specifically, was eliminated in 1985, along with SP5, as part of a broader restructuring that consolidated specialist ranks to primarily SP4 (now simply called Specialist).
