The 47th Infantry Division, "The Viking Division," was a Minnesota-North Dakota Army National Guard division federalized for the Korean War but never saw combat, serving as a replacement unit. Its 45 years of service made it the longest-serving National Guard division to not see combat. The division was officially deactivated and its units were transferred and reflagged as the 34th Infantry Division in 1991. The "Viking" nickname and the division's insignia, featuring a Viking targe and helmet, symbolized bravery, and fearlessness.
