The 42nd Infantry Division ("Rainbow" Division) was formed in 1917 from National Guard units across 26 states and the District of Columbia for World War I, earning its nickname from this diverse, cross-country makeup. The Division's Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) is a gold metal and enamel device with red, gold, and blue bands, a white fleur-de-lis, and a demi-sun, symbolizing its "Rainbow" origin and its historical mission. The "Rainbow" Division saw action in World War I, World War II (including the liberation of Dachau), and the Global War on Terrorism, and continues to be a key part of the U.S. Army National Guard.
