The 3rd Infantry Division, also known as the "Rock of the Marne," earned its nickname during World War I in 1918 for its steadfast stand on the banks of the Marne River against German forces, refusing to retreat even when surrounding units pulled back. Since its activation in 1917, the Division has fought in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terror, including Desert Storm and Iraq. It has one of the most decorated combat records in the U.S. Army, with more Medal of Honor recipients (61) than any other division, embodying the motto, "Nous Resterons Là" ("We shall remain here").
