The US Army 3rd Armored Division's nickname, "Spearhead," was derived from its role as the lead element in many attacks during the liberation of France in 1944 during World War II. The division was created on April 14, 1941, and landed in Normandy just weeks after D-Day, rapidly advancing and becoming the first US division to enter Belgium and cross the German border. Its emblem is a red spearhead on a blue shield, with the spear pointing forward to symbolize its designation as a vanguard unit.
