The 36th Infantry Division ("Texas" or "Arrowhead" Division) was formed in 1917 from Texas and Oklahoma National Guard troops, with the blue arrowhead representing Oklahoma's Native American heritage and a "T" for Texas. After service in World War I, the "T-Patchers" were reactivated for World War II, landing at Salerno, Italy, in 1943 as the first U.S. division to assault the European mainland. The Division fought through Italy, France, and Germany, liberating concentration camp subcamps before returning to the U.S. for inactivation in late 1945.
