The 35th Infantry Division, known as the "Santa Fe Division," earned its name and emblem from the division's connection to the Santa Fe Trail, which began in the Mexican-American War era, though its modern formation and significant combat history start with World War I. The division, a National Guard unit from Kansas and Missouri, distinguished itself in World War I's Meuse-Argonne offensive and then saw major combat in World War II, including the fierce fighting in the Normandy hedgerows, the capture of St. Lo, and the breakout across France. The division's actions in WWII, particularly its role in Normandy, are a central part of its fame.
