The U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, known as "The Mountaineers," was formed to train skiers and mountaineers for winter warfare, serving with distinction in Italy during World War II and later contributing significantly to the U.S. ski industry's founding and growth. After inactivating post-WWII, it was reactivated in 1985 as a light infantry unit, deploying in various conflicts and domestic relief efforts.
