The 187th Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Rakkasans" or "Iron Rakkasans," is an active element of the 101st Airborne Division, known for its combat service in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The regiment's history dates back to 1942, first serving as a glider infantry regiment before being selected for airborne operations. The "Rakkasan" name originated from its deployment to Japan, referring to the traditional Japanese umbrella used by the Japanese people, and the unit's motto is the Latin phrase "Ne Desit Virtus," meaning "Let Valor Not Fail".
