The 187th Infantry Regiment, the Rakkasans, is an active airborne regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, not typically described as a Cold War-era unit, though it served in Korea shortly after its activation. Their famous nickname, "Rakkasans," meaning "falling umbrella," was earned during the post-WWII occupation of Japan. The Torii (gate) is a prominent symbol for the regiment, and its motto, "Ne Desit Virtus" (Latin for "Let Valor Not Fail"), is central to their identity.
