The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, nicknamed the "Triple Nickles", was the first all-Black parachute unit in the US Army, formed during World War II. Activated in 1944, they were initially slated to fight in Europe, but the unit was reassigned to the Pacific Northwest to combat forest fires caused by Japanese balloon bombs. This mission, known as "Operation Firefly", saw the Triple Nickles become the first military smokejumpers, pioneering techniques for parachuting into forest fires.
