The 31st Engineer Battalion is not currently stationed at Fort Lewis, but it has a historical connection to the base. The battalion was once active at what was then Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) after serving in Vietnam and was inactivated there in 1972. Today, the battalion's lineage is carried on by a unit currently stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, which focuses on combat engineering, construction, and route clearance.
