The 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (2-505th PIR) is a modern unit within the 82nd Airborne Division, with its lineage tracing back to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a unit formed during World War II that fought in the invasions of Sicily and Normandy. The 2-505th is the descendant of the WWII-era 505th PIR and is currently part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bragg, NC. While the 505th PIR was part of the 82nd Airborne Division's efforts in the European theater, 2-505th's history since then includes deployments to the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Panama, the Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan, as well as continued training for Airborne operations.
