On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the U.S. Army's 22nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Division, assaulted Utah Beach. The 3rd Battalion landed in the first wave, with the 1st and 2nd Battalions following in the second wave. The regiment faced strong resistance but secured the beachhead and advanced inland, playing a crucial role in the subsequent battles for Cherbourg, the Normandy hedgerows, and Operation Cobra.
