The 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) was assigned to Fort Hood, TX, in February 1996, becoming part of the Army's test unit, Force XXI, known for experimenting with new technologies and tactics. The battalion's time at Fort Hood included deploying soldiers to Guantanamo Bay in 2002 for the Joint Task Force 160 and sending troops to Iraq in 2003-2004, where they endured intense combat operations.
