The 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment ("Manchus") earned its nickname from its service in China during the Boxer Rebellion, where the motto "Keep Up the Fire" originated from COL Liscum's dying words. The unit later served in Korea at Camp Hovey, and the "Manchu" identity is a source of pride for the regiment due to its long history and deeds of valor in numerous conflicts, including the Korean War. The "Toko-ri" term is likely a misspelling of Tôkuri-ri (also known as the Battle of Kunu-ri), a significant engagement during the Korean War where the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry, played a role.
