The 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Manchus," were stationed at Camp Hovey, South Korea, participating in operations like the "Toko-ri" and various training exercises including COLD SVC. Their nickname "Manchus" comes from their actions during the Boxer Rebellion in China around 1900, where their motto "Keep Up the Fire" originated from Colonel Emerson Liscum's dying words during the Battle of Tientsin. The unit's history also includes engagements in the Philippine Insurrection and other conflicts, continuing through Vietnam and Iraq, maintaining a legacy of combat readiness and extensive training in diverse environments.
