The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, nicknamed the "Triple Nickles", was the first African American parachute unit in the U.S. Army. Activated in 1943 at Fort Benning, Georgia, they were initially a test platoon from the 92nd Infantry Division, and later grew into a battalion. Despite facing prejudice and segregation, they excelled in training and were renowned for their courage and skill. They are best known for their role in "Operation Firefly" during World War II, where they fought forest fires in the Pacific Northwest, sparked by Japanese balloon bombs.
