The 9th Cavalry Regiment, one of the original Buffalo Soldier units established in 1866, was stationed at Fort Missoula, Montana, as part of the U.S. Army Cavalry Branch. From this post, the regiment conducted patrols, border security, and engaged in frontier defense during the Indian Wars and later conflicts.
