The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the "Triple Nickles," was the first all-black parachute infantry unit in the U.S. military. Activated on November 25, 1944, at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, they were pioneers in desegregating the Army and developing techniques for airborne firefighting. They became known as the military's first smokejumpers, responding to fires caused by Japanese balloon bombs in the Pacific Northwest.
