The 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR), initially formed as a battalion in 1941, became a regiment in 1942 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, earning the nickname "Five-O-Deuce". It saw extensive action in World War II, including significant roles in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. The regiment was later reflagged as an air assault unit and has served in subsequent conflicts like the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Iraq War.
