The 40th Infantry Regiment, one of the initial "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, was established in 1866 following the Civil War. It was composed of African American enlisted men and white officers, serving on the Western frontier. In 1869, the 40th Infantry was consolidated with the 39th Infantry to form the 25th U.S. Infantry Regiment<<!n av>>, which continued the legacy of service in the West, including at Fort Clark, Texas.
