During the Cold War, the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division served in West Germany from 1958 to 1996, acting as a crucial deterrent against the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact forces as part of the main defense of Western Europe. Stationed with V Corps (1958–63, 1992–96) and VII Corps (1963–92), the division maintained a high state of combat readiness through rigorous training, participating in joint NATO exercises, and continuously modernizing its equipment to meet the ever-present threat of war.
