The 38th Infantry Regiment, a "Buffalo Soldier" unit, was organized at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, in 1866. It was one of the original African American regiments formed after the Civil War. The regiment served on the Western frontier, playing a role in conflicts with Native American tribes and protecting settlers. The 38th Infantry was later consolidated with the 41st Infantry to form the 24th Infantry.
