The 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, played a significant role in Operation Hawthorne during the Vietnam War, which involved intense fighting with the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN). The operation, primarily focused on the Kontum Province, saw the 2/502nd engaged in heavy combat, including being surrounded and requiring air support to break through the enemy lines.
