The 25th Infantry Regiment, one of the original Buffalo Soldier regiments, was organized at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, Louisiana, in April 1868. It was formed from the consolidation of the 39th and 40th Infantry Regiments, both of which were all-Black units. The regiment served primarily in the American West, participating in the Indian Wars and other frontier duties.
