The 24th Infantry Regiment, a "Buffalo Soldier" regiment, was formed in 1869 by consolidating the 38th and 41st Infantry Regiments. It was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, MO, and served in the Western United States, primarily fighting Native Americans and protecting settlers. This regiment, along with the 25th Infantry, was composed of Black soldiers, many of whom were former slaves or freedmen.
