The 24th Infantry Regiment, a distinguished unit of the "Buffalo Soldiers," had a significant history at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Formed from the consolidation of the 38th and 41st Infantry Regiments, it was comprised of Black enlisted soldiers, many of whom were veterans of the U.S. Colored Troops or freedmen. The regiment served in the Western United States, including Fort Sill, from 1869 to 1880, participating in garrison duties, conflicts with Native Americans, and border protection.
