The 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the original Buffalo Soldier regiments, was activated at Fort McKavett, Texas, in 1869. It was formed by consolidating the 38th and 41st U.S. Infantry Regiments, both of which were composed of African American soldiers. The regiment served in the American West, primarily involved in garrison duty, fighting Native Americans, and protecting settlers and infrastructure.
