During the Gulf War, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment (1-1 CAV) of the 1st Armored Division played a key role in the Battle of Medina Ridge on February 27, 1991, initiating contact with the Iraqi Republican Guard's Medina Luminous Division. The M1 Abrams-equipped U.S. forces utilized the height of Medina Ridge to their advantage, preventing Iraqi tanks from effectively targeting them while the Abrams tanks engaged at superior ranges. The resulting clash, one of the largest tank battles of the war, was a decisive American victory, with the Iraqi army suffering heavy losses in tanks, artillery, and vehicles, including the destruction of hundreds of armored vehicles.
