The 187th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Rakkasans," has a unique and distinguished history as the only airborne regiment to serve in all major conflicts since airborne warfare began, participating in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan and Iraq. The regiment's historical firsts include being the first to conduct a combat amphibious landing on enemy-held shores (Luzon) and the first allied airborne unit to encounter and destroy an enemy combat parachute operation (Leyte). The unit earned the "Rakkasan" nickname during the post-WWII occupation of Japan, meaning "falling umbrella" in Japanese.
