The 10th Cavalry Regiment was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, composed of Black soldiers formed in 1866 after the Civil War. The unit earned its "Buffalo Soldier" nickname from Native Americans and fought in numerous engagements, including the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War (notably the charge up San Juan Hill), and the Philippine-American War. After extensive service in the western US and abroad, the regiment served in non-combat roles before its eventual deactivation in World War II and later inactived and reactived throughout the following decades.
